PLATELET-RICH PLASMA THERAPY
Common questions about platelet-rich plasma therapy
What is platelet-rich plasma therapy?
Platelet-rich Plasma Therapy is a medical procedure that uses a concentration of a patient’s own blood platelets to accelerate healing in injured tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints.
What conditions can platelet-rich plasma therapy treat?
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy uses a concentration of platelets derived from a patient’s own blood to support the body’s healing response. It may be considered for selected cases of Joint Pain & Arthritis, as well as certain tendon and ligament conditions. Its effectiveness varies by condition, and it is not an established treatment for every cause of joint pain or bursitis.
How long does pain relief from platelet-rich plasma therapy last?
Improvement may develop over several weeks, with potential benefits lasting months or longer in selected conditions. Results and evidence vary considerably by diagnosis.
Is platelet-rich plasma therapy painful?
Most patients experience only mild and brief discomfort during the procedure. A local anesthetic may be used to help minimize pain and keep you comfortable. The injection causes inflammation which is quite painful and the pain can last 24-72 hours. The injection site may also become red and swollen. Pain can be treated with Tylenol and sometimes a prescription pain medicine is provided as it is important to avoid anti-inflammatory medicine.
